Global Peace Index
The 16th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) was released a week ago. Produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), this report is the world's leading measure of global peacefulness and presents the most comprehensive data-driven analysis to-date on trends in peace, its economic value, and how to develop peaceful societies.
The index is made up of 23 quantitative and qualitative indicators that vary from security to political matters and are collected from different and reliable sources. Portugal is annually analyzed on this indicators to see how much safer the country is.
For the seventh year in a row, Portugal is ranked as a top-6. The current edition brought only five countries above Portugal: Iceland, New Zealand, Ireland, Denmark, and Austria. Narrowing down to only European countries, Portugal is a top-10 since the beginning of this ranking in 2008.
Although there are matters that demand development like a better definition for the structure of security officers, Portugal has the best grades possible in subjects such as safety, internal conflicts, neighbouring country relations, displaced people, violent crime, and terrorist activity. The political stability is also a highlight indicator in favour of Portugal.
This type of report gives more credibility and confidence for those who are willing to move to Portugal to study, to work or simply to live in a warm-climate country, with a fair cost of living and, as showed above, one of the most peaceful places in the world. That's one of the reason that people choose Portugal their new home after retirement, for example, going trough the D7 visa process.
